Funny, but what was predicted to happen later in this century is right on our fucking doorstep.
And it’s all due to greed. The wealthy and wealthy wannabees are trying to squeeze the last dollar out of the earth before we all die. It’s that simple.
The only president in modern times to realize the gravity of our climate course is Jimmy Carter. He instituted climate initiatives aimed at making the US 20% energy independent by 2000. He even put solar panels on the White House.
Then along came Reagan. Reagan was an interesting bloke. In the forties and fifties he was very progressive. But he hated paying taxes and friends pulled him aside and showed him where the big money was and, well, the first thing he did upon getting elected to the presidency was to remove those damn solar panels . . . and then he quashed all of Carter’s energy initiatives.
Why would he do this?
Fossil fuels is where the big money was. Reagan helped make the rich richer. In fact, in our piece A Short Course in Economics, you’ll learn how he is responsible for the wage gap in this country.
Carter had been aiming at just 20% energy independent, but that’s the thing about science: it makes leaps and bounds when we expect it to crawl along like the rest of us.
The science involved in energy production expanded exponentially and it turns out that by 2000 we would have been 80% energy independent. And today? Easily 100% independent with upwards of 90% green energy running this nation. Oh, and that extinction event? Pushed further and further away with future generations keeping an eye on it.
Instead . . . right now we’re looking at a possible collapse of our civilization in the next ten years (or so).
Human beings love to show off our intelligence, but when it comes to our survival, we’re as stupid as snails. It’s the greed.
“Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat, but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.”

I read a study once, out of Texas, that the better educated in mathematics a people were, the less they gambled. It’s very simple. They knew that the odds against their winning were way too high and that only suckers gambled. And yet, voters in America, vote on the side of the wealthy because they feel that one day, they too will be filthy rich. And yet, the odds of them getting filthy rich through working are smaller than actually winning the lottery. That’s the math.
It’s greed. Greed and stupidity are leading us down the path to destruction.

We are all doing our part. We can do more. We can all chip in to slow climate change. But it will do no good.
It’s the corporate world that is killing the planet. It’s the billionaires. It’s the greed.

EVERYTHING is faster, higher and hotter.
All the models on sea level rise are way off. The cryosphere is in uncontrolled melt. Models didn’t account for processes they didn’t know existed or didn’t think of.
If humanity could see the scope of the death taking place under the waters they would be terrified.
Rising heat + lack of oxygen creating an event reminiscent of the Great Permian Mass Extinction 250 million yrs ago where 95% of marine life died.
One devastating study after another: “scientific studies have now recorded ‘regime shifts’ like these in more than 20 different types of ecosystem where tipping points have been passed.”
Everybody is in it for the money. The non binding pledges at The United Nations Climate Change Conference mean zilch.
40% of tropical deforestation was in Brazil last year- we’re doing this for hamburgers – it is for agriculture. Amazon is flipping – going to savannah.

Did you know that there were 42,000 fires in the Amazon in one month? 31% of Eastern Amazon is gone. The tipping point will happen in the east because moisture cycles from east to west.
We’re being lied to on a massive scale. We need action, but instead we get rhetoric = optimism and greenwash.
Canada – has never met a climate goal.
Fossil Fuel producers get more PUBLIC financial support than in any other country in the world, and they are planning expansion of oil sands.
One of the largest international fossil fuel financers in the world.

I’m done. Yes, I’m done. Here are memes to contemplate. I’m going to go play Frisbee with my dog.
